Nested Applications

Argon – high-purity noble gas for industrial and analytical applications

Argon is a colorless, odorless, non-flammable, and non-toxic noble gas. Due to its excellent inertness, it is one of the most widely used protective gases in industry and laboratories. Even at extremely high temperatures, argon remains chemically stable and does not react with other substances – a property that makes it indispensable for many technical processes.

Industrial extraction of argon

With a proportion of around 0.93%, argon is a natural component of air. The most economically efficient method of extracting pure argon gas is air separation on an industrial scale. In modern air separation plants, argon is separated from oxygen and nitrogen by fractional liquefaction and distillation.

Applications of argon – versatile, safe, and precise

The application of argon is versatile and cross-industry. Due to its inertness, argon is ideal as a protective gas in metal processing – e.g., in inert gas welding. Its excellent ionizability also makes it ideal for plasma-based processes in analytics.

Typical areas of application:

  • Analysis: use in ICP spectrometry (inductively coupled plasma spectrometry), gas chromatography (GC), as purge and zero gas, and as filling gas for detectors
  • Metal processing: shielding gas in arc welding, metal finishing
  • Electronics manufacturing: inert gas in semiconductor production
  • Glass manufacturing: protective atmosphere for processing special types of glass

Our technical experts will be happy to advise you on the appropriate purity class and the optimal delivery format – from single cylinders to bulk supply.

Your advantages with argon from Messer:

  • Wide range of high-purity argon in industrial quality
  • Maximum safety thanks to certified products
  • Versatile applications – ideal for welding, analysis, and production
  • Individual advice and flexible delivery formats
